Debabelizer is only available on the new Mac in 134 (Power Mac 9500/200 – Video Editing Station). Special instructions are necessary in order to turn on this Mac. The Pro Max drive array needs to be turned on first. Then turn on the Mac. NEVER TURN ON THE PRO MAX ARRAY AFTER THE MAC HAS BEEN BOOTED (if you forget, you need to shut the Mac down and then start over again). When shutting down this system, first shut down the Mac and then the Pro Max drive array. NEVER TURN OFF THE PRO MAX ARRAY WHILE THE MAC IS ON.

Go to the Apple Menu. Under Media Tools, find Debabelizer 1.6.5.

Step 2a: Instructions for Fli/Flc file formats

1. Go to File – Open. Set file type to Fli, Flc – open file.
2. The Animation File Frame Selection Window will appear. In this program, you cannot play the animation. You can only look at one frame of your animation. This box establishes which frame you can view. The frame that you chose is the starting point of your translation. This enables you to convert portions of your animation, by allowing you to choose the beginning frame and the ending frame. If you want to convert your entire animation, open at frame 1 and do not check the "Don’t go pass frame __" selection. Hit Ok and the file will open showing you the selected frame.
3. Go to File – Save As. Set "Save type" to "Movie" which can be found under the QuickTime Movie selection. Set file name and then check the All Cells box. This allows you to save all of the frames as one movie. Hit Save.
4. The Animation File Frame Selection box will appear again in order to confirm your start and end frame. Select the "Skip this box next time" box so that this window does not appear every time the computer is processing a frame. Make sure you confirm the starting and ending because the system may reset to the default. If you need to see this box again (including when starting a new movie translation) hold down the option key. Hit Ok.
5. For output directly to video tape, select the Targa Video compressor. (Movies saved this way will only be playable on video editing systems like this one with a Targa Video Board, but will output to tape at a very high quality. Output to other devices or locations such as the World Wide Web must be saved using one of the software compressors available.) Set quality to Most. Set playback speed to number of Frames per Second desired for playback. (Animations in MicroStation or 3Dstudio are saved at 12 fps by default. Debabelizer will allow you to speed up or slow down your sequence.) Hit Ok to begin the translation.

Step 2b: Instructions for still image sequences

1. Go to File – Batch – Save.
2. The Batch Save window will appear. Set file type to the file format you are using (jpg, tga, tiff, etc.). Hit New.
3. In the Batch List window, set file type again and now find your files. Select the files on the left side of the window that you want to translate and Append them to the right side of the window. Use Append All if you want all of the files in that directory (regardless of type). If you only want to select a few of the files, you have to select them one at a time (double-clicking replaces having to hit Append each time). Give the Batch List a name (bottom right – this saves the list for future reference) and then hit Save.
4. For the settings on the right hand side of the window: make sure that "Do Script" is set to Nothing and that the "Display" is Off. Select Save "To: Manually Select." Now, set "Type" to "Movie" which can be found under the QuickTime Movie selection. Select Auto Set for "Colors." Check the box for "1 Animation/File," this saves all of the images to one file. Select both "Bypass Warning Messages" and "Auto OK in Dialogs in ___ Seconds" and set the number of seconds to 0. Hit Do It.
5. Select file name and location. Hit Save.
6. Select the Targa Video Compressor (see Step 2A-5 above for details). Set quality to Most. Set playback speed to the speed you want. Hit Ok to begin translation. (Note: You will see a dialog box appear for every image in the translation, these settings should be okay – if you want to check the first one, hold down the option key (as long as you are holding down the option key, you can change the settings). Release the option key to continue. The settings in this window control the appending of the single images in the movie – if your images are not saving as a single movie, you probably need to check the settings in this box – the only way to get to this box is during this stage of the translation).

Place your final translated movie into your account directory on Gaudi, or output the movie to video tape. Remember that the Targa compressed movies will only play correctly on this or similarly configured video editing systems.
