Format for Final Movie Submission - May 13, 2005

Your final movie - 1 to 5 minutes in length – is due on May 13th and needs to be ready for the final screening in Campbell room 158 that evening. To best prepare for the screening, all movies must be submitted in their final form by 3:00 pm that day to Eric Field in room 134. You should submit your final movie in both of the following two media types.

1. Playable DVD Video – DVDs can be made using any of the Macintosh computers (G4 and G5) in rooms 130, 139 and elsewhere using iDVD software. This method compresses and arranges your movie (a quicktime .mov file) and burns it to the DVD disc such that it can be played in any standard home DVD player. Please allow enough time for this process (an hour or longer sometimes, depending on your movie), and please test your final DVD before turning it in.
For instructions on producing a playable DVD movie disc with iDVD, consult this PDF documentation.

2. Quicktime Movie File – This is a playable movie (.mov) file using one of the standard Quicktime compression methods discussed in class. This is Exported from Final Cut Pro using File/Export/Quicktime Movie or File/Export/Final Cut Pro Movie.

Compression settings examples include:
- DV-NTSC Video compression, 29.97 FPS, No audio compression (FCP default, very large files, but best quality)
- MPEG-4 video compression, 29.97 FPS, MPEG-4 audio compression

* Please use full-screen size for your movie – NTSC 720x485 or VGA 640x480.

You may need to try exporting to one or more of these settings to determine which one looks best. If you are having trouble, stick with the first one – DV-NTSC. This, or MPEG-4, will be best for most camera video. Once saved, the .mov file should be turned in to Eric Field via CD-ROM or DVD (data) disc. This files can be quite large, so be prepared to store it on appropriate media.
