cinema media fabrics assignment six: final project |
Final Project (preliminary draft of requirements)
A viewing of the final exercise will be on Thursday, May 12, from 2 p.m. until 3:30 in Campbell 105. An optional preview will be held on the last day of the term, May, 3rd, 2016.
Setup will begin at 1:30 p..m.. We will share perspectives on the projects as well as reflect more generally on the nature of emergent moviemaking media.
Within this exercise,
create a roughly 30 seconds to 2 minute animation, video movie or interactive presentation through the Processing platform based upon any of the themes you've explored in the class and using any combination of technologies that we have examined. You are also welcome to add an alternative technology towards the production of a short movie. In your final exercise, consider the legacy of direct cinema, a process of moviemaking that is based upon discovery and seeks to uncover rather sets out with a preconception of the final end result. As increasingly more flexible and diverse media allow for the capture of motion picture information and sensory datra, consider also how harnessing a graphics programming language can be used to expand upon some aspect of controlling the interaction and output. Media fabrics is a term the describes a bridge between virtual media and our more tangible connection with it through a computer or other device. The direct application of moviemaking towards physically altering our interaction with the environment is just at the limits of the scope of our immediate explorations this term; however, you may wish to use the final project to speculate on this aspect of the combing processing with video capture and motion picture media and a physical input device, compurvision or micro-controller, in shaping our understanding of and ability to modify or interact with the built and natural environment.
SUBJECT AREAS
The primary expectation of the final exercise is that it proceed from your preliminary explorations of exercise 6. It may express concepts of the earlier exercises. This may include capturing an impression of a place or event such as in a postcard, studying a process, reporting news in progress as in a news ticker, varying the threshold of perception of time such as suggested by a time machine, and studying or orchestrating motion choreography that was the basis for tje earlier exercises. Arch 5424 is a new class and an experimental workshop, and therefore a more risk taking and less polished approach to the final project is appropriate. You have discretion with respect to medium and subject of the final project. However, it should have a perceptible sense of a "beginning", "middle" and "end". That is, it should still have the conceptual structure of a movie, whether its content is a more abstract treatment or realistic depiction of places and people.
If possible for final documentation, the final product should be captured as a single movie file. Otherise it should be documented by a copy of your work in Processing, photos, and potentially circuit diagrams of your work with Arduino.
MEDIA OPTIONS
1. Processing Sketch(s) with or without other media in animation, video, and motion capture, and/or Arduino microcontroller configuruation.
2. Digital Editing
Complie any video in Quicktime Pro. Optionally, import the or movie for final editing in iMovie or any alternative of your own choosing. Consult with Earl Mark and/or Katie Banach about the scope of
your study and technique as needed. Work on this assignment should be carefully
scheduled and spread over the next three weeks to allow time for technical trouble-shooting and to gain perspective.
3. Sound (Optional)
Incorporate captured, processed or alternative sounds if approprate to the focus of your exercise.
Submission
1. You may submit a movie clip of 30 seconds to 2 minutes
is a good size for this exercise and/ or as approriate your Processing sketch(s), photos, and circuit diagrams.
2. Send notification via email to Earl Mark, ejmark@virginia.edu,
amd to Katie Banach, to Katie Banach, kab5vv@virginia.edu, about the completion of this assignment, its file name(s) and directory
location in the classes folder, and a brief description about your
intentions.
3. All submissiont should be placed in sub-folder labelled "FinalProject" in your submit folder, movie files in the format "LastName_FIrstNameFinalProject.mov", and any Processing folder as "LastName_FirstNameFinalProject" with the Processing pde file(s) and any other supporting media included. For archiving purposes and ease of display, you are asked to save all movie files to the QuickTIme H.264 format.
4. Please submit your final project at least on hour in advance of the screening on May 12th, if not the evening of May 11th.
