Initiating Groups and Their Core Claims
For Protests in the United States (1960-1995)

Information
In a data set of over 23,000 entries of recorded protests in The New York Times, it is difficult to see the big picture. This alluvial diagram helps parse through the complex narrative of protests and demonstrations over the years by breaking down who is protesting for what cause. The thickness of each connecting line represents the number of times that combination of initiating group and claim is logged. Note that this visualization does not represent the full complexity of the protests as it only accounts for the single primary characteristic of both the initiating groups and their claims. The valence of the claims is not accounted for (pro/con).
