Assignment 1: Preliminary Independent Project Topic

Select a potential independent project topic in consultation with the seminar instructor Earl Mark and/or SIA Madeleine Zahn and start a preliminary literature search and some selected readings. Bring your own perspective to the selection of the topic rather than necessarily stay within the presumed seminar framework. See office hours and email addresses for Mark and Zahn (to be posted soon).
For example, you may wish to consider a topic from one of three options:
1. An analysis and modification of an existing refugee camp or rapid shelter deployment.
2. The development of a hypothetical program, policy or critique of an existing of refugee camp, such as the depolyment of adaptible rapid shelter, or the deployment of specialized resources in the built enviornment (e.g., medical lab, schools, recreational space, etc.).
3. The analysis of green spaces, cultural activity spaces, light industry, WASH system resources, or other specialized spaces or facilities that address the needs the needs of a forcibily displaced community.
Submission requirement.
1. Submit a one to two page page summary of potential key concepts and an initial bibliography with or without illustrations. The document should be saved to Microsoft word or to PDF file format and posted to the submit folder on the classes server for "ARCH5500-ARCH8500-Mark-SPR2024" and under the sub-folder "submit/lastname_firstname/Assignment1". The submission process will be demonstrated during class. See also Classes server access details.
2. Notify Earl Mark and Madeleine Zahn by email regarding the submission and let us know if you run into any difficulties with the Internet access.
